Model United Nations – MUN

I’ve enjoyed the pleasure and opportunity to serve as a faculty advisor for students participating in the Model United Nations Program at Jiangxi University. The Model United Nations gives students an opportunity to discuss, negotiate and arrive at resolutions to solve real life issues happening today at the United Nations. The topic of the conference recently held here was, “External Debt Sustainability and Development”, which proved to be a very challenging economic topic.

Students first present Position Papers in one day, based on real life positions of their assigned country, then Working Papers the following day, and finally, after negotiating where possible, arriving at presenting a Draft Resolution. All of this is done under the very strict guidelines that are used at the  United Nations in terms of language and format. A tremendous learning experience for these international students (and me too!)

Student Club Week

Last week was a very busy week, for the students as well as the teachers. As teachers, we were wrapping-up the first four weeks of teaching and learning our students’ names, getting used to our classes, fine-tuning our syllabus for the rest of the semester. For the students, especially the sophomores, it was a week of interviews, meetings and elections to the Student Council. Second year students interview the arriving freshman for the various clubs and student organizations which they may want to participate. The freshman classes just began yesterday as they spend the first 3 weeks in military training before starting classes.

Here are some images of the colorful posters the organizations put up to entice the freshman to come join their particular club. Some are simple inscriptions while others are more elaborate. Sophomores spent a lot of time to prepare for this important week of activities.
